Reading Room and Reference Library
(services offered in reading rooms):
- You must have a valid library card to use the reading rooms and available e-services;
- Online orders for materials requested for retrieval to the reading rooms can be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week via our web site; call slip requests may still be submitted in the Catalogue Room or reading rooms;
- items retrieved from the stacks will be available for pick-up in reading rooms and held for 7 days;
- open access to shelves and reference libraries is provided in all reading rooms, while professional assistance is offered by experienced library staff;
- microform readers and wi-fi areas are provided in reading rooms;
- authorised users are permitted to print, scan and photocopy using multi-function devices which are provided in various locations across the library;
- the “From dusk to dawn” service offers an opportunity for readers to have books that are typically not checked out on loan for the night period

The reading room is open to scholars and research workers: professors, post-doctoral researchers, PhD holders and, provided availability of accommodation, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students.
Researchers can request that material from the stack room be placed on hold for later pick up in the reading room (up to three months).

The Comics and Periodical Reading Room houses a collection of nearly ten thousands comics, periodicals and research books on the art of comics. The collection holds unique albums, collector’s editions, zines, issues with variant covers and wrappings, graphic novels and manga. The collection includes Polish and American superhero comics and comics publications in foreign languages (French, Italian and German, among others). A decision to separate the comics collection and make it available in a new dedicated reading room has been prompted by the popular demand and the ever-growing interest in the comics art. The room is also an ideal place for hosting cultural events (Poznań Comics Debate Academy, All’s Well at the Library meetings, evening with authors, lectures and talks, lessons for schoolchildren, book launches or concerts.
In the Reading Room you will find:

The Special Collections Department aims to collect, organise and make available materials from its individual study rooms in the Special Collections Reading Room, i.e. manuscripts, incunabula, old prints, historic iconography, maps and atlases, handwritten musical scores, masonic documents and social life documents as well as books published in the Wielkopolska region (Greater Poland) until 1953 included in the so-called National Library Book Resources (NZB).
Since 2016 the reference book collection in the Special Collections and Local Studies Reading Room has been expanded to include books, periodicals, pamphlets and brochures that relate to the history of Poznań and the region within its historical boundaries.
National Library Resources (Polish: Narodowy Zasób Biblioteczny – NZB) comprises of 45 medieval manuscript codices that, following the decision of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage taken in 2016, have been listed as items of the national library resources. In 2013, all the selected items were digitised and are now available in digital form at Wielkopolska Digital Library web-site listed as the “Poznan University Library Medieval Manuscripts (also available to browse on Europeana). The codices are made available exclusively for research after submitting a request in the Manuscript Study Room.
Local Studies Library Resources (Polish: Regionalny Zasób Biblioteczny – RZB) Include books and serials as well as documents of social life published regionally, or within the historical boundaries of Greater Poland, until 1953 inclusive, and a number of selected other library collections that originated in the region. The decision to separate the collections form the general library holdings was imposed by the need of their special care and particular requirements for their sharing resulting from the deposit copy obligations of the Library to collect all publications published in the region thus documenting the region’s academic, literary and artistic output.
Materials marked with the RZB sign are kept in special separate stack room and can be accessed only in the Special Collections and Local Studies Reading Room
The book collection available in the Reading Room is arranged according to subjects (history and politics, cities and villages, economic issues, education and culture, music, cinema, theatre, arts, iconography, churches and religious orders, and bibliographical dictionaries).
The Special Collections and Local Studies Reading Room and Local Studies Reading Room houses reference material pertinent to the history of Jewish heritage in Poland, books on Judaism and Jewish traditions, in particular titles that relate to Jewish culture in Poland and those that explore Holocaust-related themes.
In the reading room you will find:
- a quiet and inspiring place to study (12 seats),
- prompt delivery of books from the stacks and study rooms,
- free access to the reference collection,
- access to the collections of the specialist study rooms (i.e., manuscripts, old prints and rare books, iconographical material, maps and atlases, musical scores, Masonic documents and social life documents) and the opportunity to consult specialist library staff within the working hours of the reading room,
- audio-visual facilities offering appropriate equipment for presentations (overhead projector and screen), allowing researchers and students to conduct lectures and talks,
- continuously renewed and updated book stock with new book purchases

In general, the Section initiates preventative steps and conservation treatment to preserve the Library’s collections. The Section is charged with the following responsibilities:
- book conservation, book restoration, book repair, paper conservation, and in general all works aimed at protecting the library collections from harmful effects of exposure to physical, chemical, biological and mechanical damage.
- book repair and re-binding and re-casing of nineteenth century publications and periodicals and journals currently in print.
- The Section pursues a number of objectives towards achieving its goal of maintaining the collection in serviceable condition: Damaged and deteriorated general collections’ materials and rotting old books are restored by giving them new bindings and preserving brittle pages. The Section determines the appropriate conservation treatment for materials, i.e. manuscript and hand-written documents (both on paper and parchment), old and rare prints, incunabula, maps, posters, picture postcards and photographs.
- producing protective enclosures, specially designed to protect different types of items and their state of preservation, as well as other accessories such as boxes, cases for books, wrappers, folders or cardboard tubes for maps, are also made.
- disinfection of book materials in the section’s vacuum chamber and safe non-toxic pest control for books infected by microorganisms or insects.
- monitoring environmental conditions in the Library, in order to ensure that appropriate temperatures and humidity levels in the stacks
This service is available for the general public.
Every year, during the Library Week and the Night of Scientists event, the Preservation Laboratory is made available for those interested.
